Assembly & setup
keyboard_arrow_downAssembly is quick and easy: a step-by-step guide comes with your rocking chair and takes you through it.
Description
keyboard_arrow_downA nursing rocking chair is an adult armchair on curved runners, built for the hours spent feeding a baby rather than for an evening in front of the television. High backrest, lumbar support, a slow arc, arms at the right height. Most are bought late in pregnancy and used several hours a day for months.
Teddy fleece and bouclé dominate, with lambswool and velvet alongside them. Frames are solid rubberwood, or a steel base fitted with solid wood runners. Some models add mechanisms rather than padding: an adjustable or removable headrest, a lumbar cushion, side pockets, and on one, a matching footstool.
Real use is repetitive. Newborns feed eight to twelve times a day, 20 to 40 minutes each time, so four to six hours a day in the same seat is normal in the first weeks. Much of that happens at night, one-handed, in the dark. The nursing chair goes next to the cot, within reach of a lamp.
Start with your own measurements, not the room. Your feet need to sit flat on the floor with your thighs level, which puts most adults on a seat height of 40 to 45 cm. Armrests matter more here than on any other chair: they carry the baby's weight for the whole feed, so they need padding along their full length, roughly level with your elbow.
Then the back. A backrest above shoulder height lets you rest your head instead of holding it up, and an adjustable headrest is what makes that work when two adults of different heights share the chair. Check the seat foam: 25 to 35 kg/m³ holds its shape, and anything softer flattens inside a year of nightly use.
The dedicated nursing chair is the fullest version: high curved backrest, lumbar cushion, adjustable headrest, side pockets for a muslin or a phone, and sometimes a footstool included. It makes sense if you expect to feed in the chair for six months or more.
The wingback models are broader in purpose. Structured sides, thick cushions that resist sagging, a removable headrest, and a shape that still reads as a living room chair once the feeding phase ends. Teddy fleece and lambswool feel warmest against bare arms at night; bouclé is firmer under the hand; velvet looks sharper and shows marks.
A plain upholstered nursery rocking chair on a rubberwood frame is the simplest and the lightest. No mechanism to adjust, less to keep clean, easier to carry between rooms. Choose it if the chair will move between the nursery and your bedroom rather than stay in one corner.
If a footstool is the deciding feature, compare rocking chairs with a footstool side by side; for a wider view of frames and fabrics, the full rocking chair selection sits alongside it, and designer rocking chairs are worth checking when the seat has to hold its own in the living room afterwards.
The intensive phase is shorter than people expect. Feeds drop from eight to twelve a day to three or four by six months, and most parents stop feeding in the chair between 12 and 18 months. A nursing rocking chair outlasts that by decades: a solid hardwood or rubberwood frame gives 15 to 20 years of domestic use, and the joints fail before the timber does.
Upholstery sets the practical limit. Fabric abrasion is measured in Martindale cycles — 15,000 is the usual threshold for general domestic use, 25,000 for heavy domestic use, and the second is the honest bracket for a seat used nightly. Foam softens after five to eight years and can be replaced. Retighten the bolts holding the runners after six months, then once a year.
Domestic seating sold in the UK is tested against EN 12520, which sets strength, durability and safety requirements based on typical use by a person weighing up to 110 kg. Stated limits here run from 100 kg to 136 kg, so read the figure against your own weight plus a baby and a feeding cushion.
Two practical points. The gap between runner and floor closes on every stroke, which becomes a finger and toe risk once a toddler crawls around the chair. And this is adult seating, not a sleep surface: UK safer-sleep guidance is to move a sleeping baby into a firm, flat cot rather than settle down in the chair together.
Four figures decide most of it: seat height, armrest height, stated load limit, and total depth with the backrest reclined. Measure the space beside the cot, then add 15 to 20 cm behind the chair for the arc. An adjustable headrest is worth more than extra padding when two adults share the seat.
What remains is fabric and frame. Teddy fleece and lambswool for warmth at three in the morning, bouclé for a firmer surface, velvet for a chair that stays downstairs afterwards. The frame sets the lifespan; the fabric sets how the first six months feel.
Care & cleaning
keyboard_arrow_downCare instructions are on the label attached to each chair. As a general rule, spot-clean with a damp cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners unless the label says otherwise.
On teddy and bouclé fabrics, a soft brush lifts the pile again where you sit.

Materials & finish
The fabric you sit on every evening is the part that ages first. That is where we start: upholstery that keeps its look through daily use, foam dense enough to hold its shape, and a frame that does not creak after a winter.
Everything listed below comes from this chair's own specification, not from a general description.

Weathered really well
It has been outside since spring, through rain and sun, and still looks as good as the day it arrived.
The answers to the questions we are asked most about this model.
It's a high-density, ultra-soft fabric chosen specifically for comfort against the skin during long sessions, not a fabric that only looks good in photos.
The adjustable headrest relieves neck tension, while the curved, enveloping armrests and ergonomic high backrest mean your back, arms and neck stay supported the whole time.
Two large side pockets keep a dummy, your phone or a book within arm's reach — no reaching or shifting position mid-feed.
You have 14 days to return or exchange it.
Its high-back, ergonomic design is built as a genuine long-term comfort chair, not a nursery-only piece — many customers keep it as their everyday reading spot.
Not at all. Everything you need is in the box, with a clear step-by-step guide to follow — most people have it fully assembled in around 30 minutes.
