The arms are the part that stops the eye. Under each one, a panel of woven cane sits in a wooden frame, open enough to see the floor through, set against a seat and back that are entirely plain. The fabric is a pale grey with a visible weave, matt, slightly uneven the way a natural fibre is. Everything else on this rocking chair is light timber, down to the runners.

The two surfaces meet at the arm. A hand moves from the padded edge of the seat onto bare cane, and the change is abrupt: soft to ridged, warm to cool. The fabric is stretched over foam inside a wooden structure rather than wrapped around a shell, so the chair reads as a set of parts. Light finds the weave before it finds anything else, and the runners give a short arc, quiet on a rug.

The base is longer than the seat suggests, since the runners reach past the back legs, and that is the measurement the floor has to take. Behind, the arc wants a hand's width before the top rail meets the wall. The open arms change nothing about the footprint, but they make the chair look lighter in a small room than a solid-sided one of the same size.

Fibre, grain and finish on a cotton and linen rocker

A cotton and linen mix behaves like the fibres it is made of. It creases where a body has been and keeps the mark for a while, it softens with use rather than staying taut, and it takes light unevenly because the threads are not uniform. A synthetic returns the same surface every time, which is a different thing to live with rather than a better one. The pale grey was decided in advance, and it sits close to the tone of the timber.

The rattan on the arms is the one hard surface on the chair. It is where hands land, so it takes the wear first, and it darkens slowly with handling in a way the fabric does not. Two materials, two routines: the fabric wants vacuuming along the seams and a barely damp cloth on marks, while the cane wants dusting into the weave with a soft brush and nothing wet left sitting in it.

Placed side by side, the difference is easier to see against the chairs built around a material, where the construction is the point, and against the seats set on curved bases, which share only the movement.

A chair woven from top to bottom is a different object. The weave carries the load there, so the shape is fixed by the frame it wraps, and the seat is only as soft as the cushion dropped into it. Here the weave is a finish on two panels, and the sitting surface is textile over foam, so the back gives where a shell would not. The frame is solid wood, rated to 150 kg.

It works in rooms that already have wood in them: a floor left bare, a sideboard, a table with visible legs. The open arms keep it from filling a corner the way a fully padded chair does, which is why it holds up in a small living room, a bedroom, or a corner used for feeds. What an all-fabric model cannot do is show its own structure.

The fabric does the sitting and the cane does the looking. The frame holds both, and none of the three hides the other two.

Does linen crease?

It does, and that is a property of the fibre rather than a fault. Flax has little natural elasticity, so it folds where it is pressed and holds the fold until it is smoothed or sat on again. On upholstery the creasing settles into a soft, lived-in surface rather than sharp lines.

Does linen fade in sunlight?

Direct sun is the main risk to it. Ultraviolet light breaks the fibre down over months, which shows first as a lighter band where a window falls, and later as brittleness in the same place. A chair set out of the direct line, or a blind drawn at the brightest hours, removes most of the problem.

How do you care for linen upholstery?

Vacuum along the seams with a brush head, since grit works into the weave and cuts the threads from the inside. Blot spills rather than rub, working inwards from the edge of the mark, and let the area dry in open air rather than beside a radiator. Heat is what leaves the surface stiff.
