The head cushion is buttoned on at the top, a small pad sitting above the channels below it. The back is drawn into long vertical channels that carry down into the seat, and the cream surface is smooth throughout, with a low sheen that shows where each channel crests. Underneath, a tan band wraps the base and meets thin black legs. That cushion is what marks this rocking chair as a seat for long stretches.

The back rises past the shoulders and keeps a slight curve, so the spine meets it along its length rather than at one point. The head cushion sits at the top of that curve, at the height the head lands once the body stops holding itself up. Two tones, and the surface behaves differently in each. In the brown the channels read as shadow, the seams going dark while the crests hold the light, so the quilting stays legible across a room. The grey flattens that reading: the gap between crest and hollow narrows, and the shape comes forward instead of the pattern. Against the pale wood of the runners the brown sits close, and the grey stands apart.

A pale grey keeps dust at the seams and registers a hand passing over the crests; the brown hides both and shows crushing instead, where the padding has been sat flat. The routine is the same either way: a vacuum with the brush head along the channels, a barely damp cloth on marks worked inwards, and nothing wet left to sit.

What is the difference between a high back and a low back chair?

Where the support stops. A low back ends around the shoulder blades and leaves the shoulders, neck and head clear of the frame. A high back carries past all three, which changes what happens when someone leans back rather than how they sit upright. Below shoulder height, the two feel much the same.
