The quilting is the first thing to register: the velvet is drawn into a grid of raised blocks across the back and the seat, each one pulled tight at the seams so the pile stands proud between the lines. In the dark colourway the seams read as black lines and the blocks as slightly lighter fields. Nothing else on this nursing rocking chair competes with that surface.

The quilting is structural as much as decorative. Each seam anchors the high-density foam to the cover, so the filling stays in its compartments. The back works the same way, the blocks holding the padding where it was sewn. Below, thin steel legs drop onto two rubberwood runners, and the arc they cut is long and shallow. Velvet does the rest, changing tone as light moves across the pile.

The figures are 78 by 61 by 98 cm. In a nursery that is wide enough to need its own wall, and shallow enough to sit under a window without crowding the sill. What the numbers do not cover is the arc: leave a hand's span behind the back, or the top of the frame meets the wall at the end of every stroke.

Three tones, and two of them sit close enough to need separating. The light grey keeps the quilting visible: daylight lands on the raised blocks and the seams stay dark. The dark grey pulls that contrast in — blocks and seams move towards the same value, leaving a shape rather than a grid. The dark goes further, holding light instead of returning it, so the pile shows only where the surface turns.

What each shows in use follows the same line. On light grey, dust settles into the seams before it marks the blocks; on the darker two, it is the pile that registers a hand passing over it, in the lighter track velvet leaves until it is brushed back. Is velvet good for upholstery?

It depends on the fibre. Polyester velvet is a dense cut pile on a woven ground, and the pile is what wears rather than the backing, so it holds up better than its reputation suggests. What it does not hide is pressure: the pile lies where it is pushed, and shows it until brushed.

What is the difference between velvet and velour?

Construction. Velvet is woven, with the pile formed on the loom and cut afterwards, which is why the surface has direction and shifts tone as you look along it. Velour is knitted, which makes it stretchier and softer to the hand, and flatter to the eye. Both are usually polyester now.

How do you clean velvet upholstery?

Vacuum weekly with a soft brush head, working along the nap rather than against it. Blot spills from the outside of the mark inwards with a barely damp cloth, never rub, and let the area dry before brushing the pile back into line. Keep harsh cleaners away, and test anything wet on the back of the chair first.
