The back is divided into horizontal bands of padding, each one rounded and slightly proud of the one below, so the front reads as a stack rather than a panel. The arms come out of the same volume and stop level with the seat. Underneath all of it, the frame is a few thin black rods and two pale wood runners. That contrast is what registers first on this rocking chair: mass above, line below.

The seat and the back are padded to the same depth, so the body meets one continuous surface instead of a cushion sitting on a base. The foam gives about a finger's depth before it holds, which is what makes the chair feel settled rather than sprung. The metal frame carries that mass without adding any of its own, and the runners take it from there, in a long arc that stays quiet on a rug.

It works against a wall with a gap, in the middle of a room, or turned into a corner, and the only measurement that changes anything is the one at the back.

The tone was fixed before anything else: a warm off-white, matt, with a fine even grain that only shows up close. Against a white wall it reads warmer than the paint and separates from it. Against a darker one it comes forward, and each band catches a rim of light along its fold. The pale wood of the runners repeats the same register, so the two never argue.

A pale surface at this depth of padding shows pressure before it shows dirt: the bands flatten where a back rests, and they come back slowly. A soft brush along each fold lifts them again, and a vacuum with the brush head takes dust out of the seams, where it settles first. Marks are blotted with a barely damp cloth, and the wood asks only for a dry one.

What is high-density foam?

Foam measured by the weight of material packed into a given volume, in kilograms per cubic metre. The higher that figure, the more material there is holding the shape, which is why denser grades recover after being sat on instead of staying compressed. Density is separate from firmness: dense foam can still feel soft.

What foam density is best for a seat cushion?

Seats need denser foam than backs, since they take the full weight and take it in one place. Upholstery guides point to the higher-density grades for anything used daily, and to softer, lighter foam for backrests and scatter cushions, where the load is spread and intermittent.

How long does upholstery foam last?

Good-quality high-density foam holds its shape for years of daily use before it starts to settle, while lighter grades flatten sooner. What shortens it is uneven loading: always sitting in the same spot on the same edge. Turning loose cushions, where a chair has them, spreads that out.
